In mid 1900’s
In Eastern Australia
A gem was born
Her name is Jennifer

In the early 2000’s
In Nigeria and Canada
Three other gems were born
Tolu, Rania and Jatinpal

In 2018
In Western Canada
These four gems met
In Bow View Manor

This is the story of how I met Jennifer.

Jennifer was merely supposed to be a part of our creative writing project
Little did she know she would be much more

She is a wife
She is a mother
She is a grandmother

She taught us many great things through her words

Through her love of climbing
She taught us to explore

Through her love of medicine
She taught us to help

Through her love of geography
She taught us to embrace nature

Through her love of the weather
She taught us to open my eyes

Through her lack of regrets
She taught us to accept my mistakes

Through her love of religion
She taught us to have faith

Through her love of family
She taught us to love

In the short hour we spent with Jennifer, she taught us more than we’d like to admit

She taught us to embrace my flaws
She reminded us that finding the beauty in the ugliest of situations is important

She taught us the importance of finding the light at the end of the tunnel

She taught us to follow our dreams

She reminded us that being negative will take us nowhere

Jennifer will always remain in our hearts
But the lessons she taught us will last a lifetime.

This is a poem we wrote for Jennifer, a lovely lady who we had the pleasure to meet when we went to Bow View Manor for our creative writing class. This poem tells a few of the many lessons Jennifer taught us in the short amount of time we got to spend with her. We were very honored to learn all about Jennifer, who was able to tell us about all her wonderful stories, which she had not thought to be interesting, although they really were. She is such a humble person, and she lived and is still living her life to the fullest, and her words will remain with us forever.

  1. Dear Tolu,
Wow, I am so in awe by how beautifully written this piece is!! You, jatinpal and rania did such a great job at putting your interview with Jennifer into an amazing poem with such a great message!
I cannot stress enough about how much I LOVE the beginning of your writing about how you brought all of your lives together. It is so clever and I never imagined something written like that. Also just the way you guys put together the whole thing by telling us what she said and the impact it had on you and that it’ll stay with you guys forever. I know that I learned a thing or two about Jennifer and I for sure will use her advice where you wrote, “Through her lack of regrets
She taught us to accept my mistakes” because Im sure we all have regrets and it is perfect how you guys said the it taught you to accept your mistakes, even thought it may be hard to.
There is nothing I could tell you that could improve this piece because it is so beautiful and perfect!! I always look forward to reading your blog and cannot wait to see what your short story is going to be about!!
    Love, Sarah Omar <3
